Empathy vs Compassion

Empathy can lead to unconscious identification with another’s pain, but compassion allows us to stay present, conscious, and discerning in the face of suffering.

Empathy vs Compassion

Empathy can pull us into another person’s pain and awaken our own unhealed wounds, sometimes leading to an unconscious identification with their suffering. Compassion is different. Compassion sees the wound clearly yet remains steady, allowing us to understand suffering without being overwhelmed by it. In this way compassion keeps us present, conscious, and discerning, so that even in the presence of pain, consciousness remains in the room.

The real work is not to drown in another’s suffering through unconscious identification, but to remain present and conscious so that compassion, rather than entanglement, can shape our response.
